BALSA HOUSE: Rasty Surfboards...

Cesar Moreira aka “Rasty”, shaper and soul surfer, champion and artist, with more than fifteen years experience is passionate when it comes to work with wood, he shapes and surfs with wood (Balsa Wood).

Is more than a job: is passion for Nature. Rasty loves it, takes care of it and respects it.

This sweet wood, which is Balsa, typical from Ecuador, is a tree of short cycle and at the same time hard, resistant, flexible and extraordinarily light!
Which allows to make light surfboards, with a lot of flexibility and much harder than any other board!
Esthetically they are wonderful boards! So beautiful!

SURF a TREE!

Is like surfing WITH Nature, ON a tree!
A dream!

The BALSA wood and "The Green Room"

The Balsa tree has a short life, from 3 to 8 years, therefore we cut it a little bit before it dies, so we can dry it and build the blank, the structure of the future board. The toxic stays in fiber and glass resin (polyester)
But after that, is a lifelong board, that will never break and get thrown away, therefore won't contaminate.
To be closer of the dream of building 100% ecologic boards, with our English friend Tamzen, we are working on the project of organic resin, so one day hopefully we can reach the dream of building a truly ecological board!
The Green Room, is the shaping room, but it means much more than that.
Green, for the stretch relationship between Rasty´s work and Nature: Cesar shapes WITH Nature, meaning in harmony with Her.
This Room, is Nature itself.
Rasty works out in the open as much as possible, helping himself with daylight for drying, with sunset light for shaping.
All his boards are handmade, without using almost nothing of machinery, his main tool is his little hand brush and a hard wood stick with sandpaper glued to it.
For Rasty, the environment has always been his priority…
The good thing about Balsa, is that is much more ecological than any other material.
That's why Rasty left aside the to toxic shaping of foam, or he touches it just to recycle big broken boards.

  • The Soul Surfer…
He is passionate about all surf culture, he loves to surf, but also adores to always know more about surfing in general…

He loves old school style, the board of his predilection is the longboard, but he also surfs: fish, single fin and stand up paddle.
He traveled a lot around South and Central America, in the seek for waves, new sensations and to know more…
  • The Champion…
For long time Rasty participated in national and international competitions.
Two times he was vice-champion in national category of Longboard, in 2002 and 2003; he won the Latin-Pro in Dominican Republic and in Ecuador in 2003; second place in 2006; third place in Costa Rica and fifth in Florida, United States, en 2003.
During 2003, Rasty came up third in Longboard category of Latin-Pro´s general ranking, which is a gathering of all best surfers in Latin America. He made this tour with his Balsa boards, proudly Ecuadorian.

This surfing level makes of Rasty a perfectionist shaper that is always in search of improving his boards, experimenting new shapes and trying inventions and toys in the ocean!
  • The Artist...
Since he was little, Rasty was super skilled with his hands.

He draws and paints, but what he loves the most is to carve on wood.
This taste for sculpture, he mixes it with shaping, making insertions in the boards.

Rasty inserts different types of wood, such as cedar, “jigua”, ebony, and mahogany among others, and stones, such as Peruvian turquoise, serpentine or “lapizazuli” and also shells like snails or among all: spondylus, typical and sacred Ecuadorian shell.

The art in the board could be something invented by Rasty, or the copy of an ancient drawing of Ecuadorian culture, also, or even better, the invention of the future owner of the board!

That way you can chose, any drawing, or better yet, draw it, Rasty will take care of inserting it! You will have a unique board and your exact choice!

Share your passion with Rasty!

He could listen to you and give you some advices about the chance of mixing your art with a board.
Write him! balsahouse@gmail.com

Or even better, you both could get together your ideas and made your dreamed board together!
